The image is definitely brighter and has more detail than the US Universal DVD. Supposedly it is the same transfer that the Euro discs have. I own the single disc Japanese release and it is an acceptable upgrade from the Universal DVD. I believe the only difference between the two Japanese releases is the bonus disc with the Lynch short.
If you find any further info on Lost Highway please post it here as I will too. I will be purchasing The Straight Story Japan very soon too. I did get the TT Wild At Heart and so pleased I did, the bonus content and the transfer is pretty damn good!! As for Lost Highway I got the German Concorde release because from what I understand it's the same transfer as the French MK2. I'm also not sure if they are both the same transfer. I did consider the Japanese copy of Lost Highway but I couldn't find any info regarding the 2 Japan releases. PS: I'm similarly concerned with version of Wild At Heart to get, but haven't researched price differences yet. So the most expensive is Japanese, French is close to that, German is pretty inexpensive, and UK is the least expensive. The German disc is only about $13 shipped from. The French disc is about $22 shipped from. That would make the JP release a little more reasonably priced, but I don't know. If I combined it with something else from Amazon JP, then the shipping tops out at about $13 USD, but I'm not sure what else I'd want from there besides maybe The Straight Story. The Japanese one is about $23 USD shipped, because Amazon JP wants over $10 to ship it. Which one is the best version for an American who wants to consider best PQ/AQ, best price, best special features, and best navigation of the disc in English, in approximately that order of importance? The UK version is cheapest for me to acquire, it looks like I can get it shipped from the UK for about $11 USD. I've been recommended to get the Japanese version of Lost Highway, but I come here looking for second opinions.
